Erik Matti's Recent Whining Twit Shows That 100% Pinoy-Owned Media Is Based On A LOSER Mindset

The current Legacy Virus aka COVID-19 pandemic has really led to some Filipinos who can afford Netflix to binge-watch Netflix. Okay, not my idea really considering that I ended up watching Kill It followed by Justice on KissAsian since both shows aren't available (but hopefully will be) on Netflix. An ongoing series I'm watching is Rugal which only shows once a week rather than twice a week broadcasts. The very comment that he wrote (screenshot above) is having him whining about Filipinos choosing to watch K-Drama galore over the local shows. He also calls them faux (fake) Cinderella stories with belofied actors whiter than white. Plus, he thinks it's all about love.

Matti himself sees the daily top ten. He now sees that the future of Filipino movies and TV doomed. If he's going to complain about a "lack" of nationalism then make sure everything used wasn't imported. I remembered writing about the overcrowded premiere of Rurouni Kenshin last 2014. The movie premiere is where I raised the question of how the decline in quality is really going on. Last year, we even had that crazy event where some Filipinos acted like as if Blackpink knew them. Why aren't teleseryes on the top ten (but maybe the BOTTOM ten) even if some of them are available to name a few? It's because of their quality. Teleseryes have their crazy "pwede na yan" mentality going on. You can also talk about how many of these teleseryes really become pointless, they go in a very serpentine path, and usually only get canceled when ratings start to drop. Most of the time, the ending isn't even satisfying after a rather long wait.

Faux Cinderella stories? All about love? Are Matti's perception and research that low? He could have at least done some SERIOUS RESEARCH first. Well, I'd say they are faux (fake) Cinderella stories because the K-Drama girls aren't damsels in distress most of the time. The popularity of Crash Landing on You isn't purely based on kilig (and the Rappler review failed to see beyond that) but on its rather developed storyline. It really shows how economic protectionism has caused North Korea to fail while those in power hypocritically enjoy the fruits of capitalism. Many times, K-Drama damsels are usually damsels out of distress. All about love? Is love story the only thing he sees? Well, there are romantic ones like What's Wrong With Secretary Kim though others aren't even focused on love. There may be romances in some of them but others dwell on legal court drama such as Stranger.

What Matti should be doing is to observe what's wrong with local TV and movies rather than whine. He should observe how shallow a lot of shows are. Take a good example with the most POINTLESS teleserye ever namely Ang Probinsyano (The Provincial). Probinsyano is currently on Netflix but not on the top ten. Who would want to watch that pointless show? That's why I wish that Netflix will get both Kill It and Justice on Netflix. I even remembered where I wrote about how Kill It owns Ang Probinsyano in just 12 episodes. The big issue is that he could have said, "We need to learn from K-Dramas so the local industry will step up." He could have made observations from K-Drama and learn how to make better productions. I think only if teleseryes would just start diverting away from the victim card mentality. If only teleseryes started to become weekly trends such as what ABiaS-CBN did with The Haunted and Parasite Island. They could start replacing the afternoon and evening serpentinely-long teleseryes with something else. The daily schedule means they're biting more than they can chew and hardly any room for editing.

The problem of the 100% Pinoy-owned media has shown more harm than good. The consequences have been that Filipino entertainment has become too complacent. They were too used to their successes during the 90s and 2000s. Who can remember the long-running 90s version of Mula Sa Puso (From the Heart) which was utterly pointless where only Princess Punzalan's performance as Selena was the only good thing about it? Who can remember the time when some students would sacrifice their assignments just to watch the latest episode of whatever teleserye there is. I could remember how ABiaS-CBN's rather serpentinely long Marina and Basta't Kasama Kita (As Long as I'm With You) were popular back in the 2000s. I had eyebrows raised at me because I was watching 100% Senorita instead which I rightly predicted that it's dumb-dub airing on GMA-7would end before Marina would. Marina was getting pointless that like why should I even watch it? Then one can consider the digital age started kicking on with the digital subscriber line (DSL) and many more. Then the dawn of Internet TV started replacing regular TV. It gave Filipinos more choices to watch. Did the networks ABiaS-CBN and GMA-7 not count on that? If so, they need to really do one thing - INNOVATE OR PERISH!
