After watching the K-Drama Justice (which came shortly after Kill It last 2019) - I decided to write this post. Some time ago, I decided to write a post where I used Kill It to bash Ang Probinsyano. Before that, I also wrote K-Dramas without an attractive actress vs. teleseryes that have plenty of attractive actresses. While Ang Probinsyano is currently suspended from airing (due to the Legacy Virus outbreak) - I still can't help but poke fun at how uncertain the days of Carlito Dalisay are on television. So, I decided to do another mockery post to poke fun at the stupidity of teleseryes. It's known that I tend to watch any good series for dumb reasons while I couldn't watch bad shows even for the eye candy.
Eye candy in most South Korea drama tends to be just a bonus factor. Most of the time, people get chosen for the ability to act or their willingness to learn. Some K-Drama series lack an attractive actress. For example, Shin Hye Sun in Still 17 is hardly an attractive woman - she's not pretty and she's not even sexy. Hye Sun in a bikini would really be very funny due to her being flat. However. Hye Sun displays her ability to act funny or serious when needed. Hye Sun may not be pretty but she grows on you with her charming personality. She may look like Sarah Elago but she's got a nicer personality. When a K-Drama gets a gorgeous actress - I doubt it that it's solely on the looks. For example, Suzy Bae's performances have been capitalizing on her willingness to grow than on her good looks. Take Suzy's performance in Gu Family Book where it's her taekwondo that gets the focus and not her looks. Otherwise, Suzy would have probably had to perform a steamy bed scene with Lee Seung Gi. In the case of Nana - she didn't have to undress in Kill It and Justice. Nana's roles as a police officer and as a prosecutor are somehow consistent. She didn't need to greet her leading guy looking rather sexy, go into bikini mode, or even have a steamy but censored bed scene with her leading guy just to gain ratings. It hardly happens that these shows capitalize on the good looks of a talented actress.
Meanwhile, teleseryes tend to capitalize on the actress' good looks. Who can remember the two versios of the Darna TV series by GMA-7? One capitalized on Angel Locsin Colmenares and another on Marian Rivera. When Angel moved to ABiaS-CBN - Lobo did add steamy scenes using her. It's pretty much different that Kim Tae Hee didn't capitalize on her good looks during Forbidden Love where she's one hot Gumiho. Shaina Magdayao in The Better (Worse) Half and the 7th season of Ang Probinsyano also used sexy scenes. The first episode of The Worse Half already featured Shaina in a steamy bed scene. I also feel like Shaina's addition in Ang Probinsyano is probably again just for fanservice. Also, that morning greeting given to Coconuts Martin was probably just there to boost ratings. I wonder do the people behind the teleseryes think that putting eye candy is more important than plot. Wait, did I forget how ABiaS-CBN decided to air Power Rangers Megafart which had lots of eye candy but truly DEVOID of substance? The show tried to capitalize on it a lot but ended up putting the Power Rangers franchise into further oblivion. Then again isn't it that contemporary Filipino entertainment tends to value form over substance?
Now it's time for another comparison. I made a comparison of a modest-wrapped lunchbox containing cheaper but good food vs. a beautifully-wrapped lunchbox containing expensive but low-quality food. Now, it's time for the scenario to get a sequel. In business, there's such a thing as presentation and packaging also matter in selling a good product. Taglines do matter but failed expectations backfire pretty badly. Let's imagine management has found the unattractive but goodhearted Hye Sun more useful behind-the-scenes so they assign Nana in her place. Hye Sun is now assigned to marketing planning and negotiations (due to her brains and heart) while Nana (due to her looks and heart) is now the promo girl. The round competition begins with ABiaS-CBN selling the same lunchboxes. Now, the next wave occurs with selling the lunchboxes. Nana tends to attract more customers because of her good looks but it's not that factor that makes her sell more. It's because Nana's lunchboxes (which were previously handled by Hye Sun) contains quality food. Meanwhile, it didn't matter how hot Shaina is because the lunchboxes of ABiaS-CBN were overpriced and of really bad quality.
