#FactsMatterPH Is Shooting Itself At The Head With Its So-Called War Against Fake News

It's so amazing at how there's #FactsMatterPH but is it about facts? It's not and the whole movement is nothing more than a sham. It would be like the whole fake news that the Aquinos are the heroes that restored democracy or any fake news Antonio Trillanes IV is spreading through social media.

Now, there's the latest forum at Ateneo De Manila Rockwell Campus where you have it sponsored by fake news makers such as CRappler, ABiaS-CBN News Network and Philippine Daily Inquirer. It's not that they are wrong all the time -- but the problem that they insist that they are right even when they are wrong. This is laughable that they are holding a forum on fake news and why fake news and disinformation threatens freedom -- because they themselves are spreading fake news.

IN a panicky tone, the news website Rappler (rappler.com) insisted in an article that the lie it had fabricated, that there were 7,080 drug-related killings since President Duterte assumed power, which it spread around the world, is true. This is despite all the debunking and data the Philippine National Police itself and I have presented.

Rappler’s epic lie—or intentional boo-boo—as I explained in the preceding two columns, involved misinterpreting the PNP’s number of “deaths under investigation or concluded investigation”, 4,525, as all due to the campaign against illegal drugs, when the PNP itself—which after all created that category—says they are not, that it included all kinds of killings, of all motives, from road rage to robbery.

Rappler then added this number to the police’s figure of 2,555 of suspected drug personalities killed in police operations to get the sum of 7,080 – which it claimed was the death toll of President Duterte’s war on illegal drugs from the time he assumed office up to January. The accurate figure would be just a third of that: 2,102 based on my calculation using data from the Philippine Daily Inquirer to 2, 582, according to the latest PNP report.

I had emailed Rappler managing editor Glenda Gloria and the researcher who wrote the piece, Michael Bueza, two weeks before I wrote my exposes on their epic lie, requesting if they could clarify to me how they got the 7,080 figure. They didn’t respond at all, not even a “no-comment” or mind-your-own-business reply.

Let's just face the facts about the sponsors of #FactsMatterPH. First, do facts REALLY matter to them. If it does they need to thoroughly investigate stuff before claiming yet. Yet, we've got a lot of fake news circulating such as attributing all the killings and drug smuggling to President Duterte -- WITHOUT PROOF WHATSOEVER. Want another fake news that they're spreading? It's all about the lie that shabu doesn't harm the brain -- if that's not fake news then I wonder what's fake news. But it doesn't stop to that -- there's even more.

There's really much misrepresentation going on concerning the Duterte Administration. You have Raissa Espinosa-Robles as an example of someone who's making up one crazy lie after the other. She lies about that Singapore didn't progress through foreign investments or how martial law is always bad -- and that's but a sample of the MANY fake news that she and her comrades are spreading. You have malicious sites like Change Scamming, #SilentNoMorePH and Pinoy Ako Blog to name a few of many that's also spreading lots of wrong information while pretending to fight it. Now, even one CRappler article even dares to accuse President Duterte as the number one source of fake news -- when they are the NUMBER ONE source of fake news themselves.

The truth is that #FactsMatterPH is nothing more than a smear campaign disguised as the truth. If the Dilawans could keep promoting the lie that their fellow Dilawan, David Guerrero made up namely "It's More Fun in the Philippines" then no one should be surprised that they're pretending to fight disinformation by spreading disinformation.

Either way, enough is enough. They can't keep up with their charade anymore of fighting disinformation by deliberately spreading it. It should be renamed from #FactsMatterPH to #FactsDontMatterPH because for them -- the facts don't matter whenever it's inconvenient!

  1. "Facts" matter when it's only convenient for 'em. Nuff said!
