Today is what might be called by Migraine International as "Flor Contemplacion Day". The 30th anniversary hit last year. However, I decided to make a bit of a comedy post today for this reason. It's already more than THREE DECADES since Flor was hanged in Singapore. However, Migraine International still insists that Flor was a martyr for the Philippines. Migraine can deny it all they want, but their adherence to the late Joma Sison's IDIOTOLOGY has red-tagged them. These people are still living in what I call the VIETNAM WAR MINDSET.
Back in 1995, Flor's death sparked the creation of The Flor Contemplacion Story starring the late Nora Aunor. The movie came out on June 7, 1995. The movie was later uploaded by VIVA Films on their YouTube channel, while a pay-per-view version is available on YouTube Movies. I would like to imagine what if The Flor Contemplacion Story had a musical. I imagined it would've happened last year (30 years anniversary), but none. This year? Well, none. It's disappointing since I actually wanted to see Sarah Jane Elgago of Gagabriela act out as Flor on stage. It may happen at UP-Diliman (where Sarah graduated), or it may happen at any campus where they love to gather and spread their idiotology.
The musical is produced by Joel Lamangan and Migraine International. It's advertised as the musical that will wrench your heart. Here's the sequence that you may want to imagine out yourself on how it might be worthy of the Raspberry Awards and Internet joke memes!
Act 1: The FDIs are putting the Philippines out of business, as the intro
This scene has foreign investors marching into the Philippines. They are destroying Filipino businesses and putting up huge buildings. Monster buildings labeled as MNCs are causing despair. Filipinos beg the foreign investors, but they don't get employment. A plane full of foreigners take the jobs away. Filipinos are crying that they have no employment opportunities.
Act 2: The weeping mother, Flor Contemplacion
Sarah shows her theatrical performance. She sings "Walang Trabaho sa Pinas". She heard Singapore is a good prospective -- unaware of the tales of horrors there. Flor decides she would go abroad for the sake of her family. Flor becomes a domestic helper. However, Efren has been cheating behind her back.
Efren then goes to his girlfriend Neneng and they start partying. Efren and Neneng sing, "Dilemma" with modified lyrics. Efren and Neneng use the remittances for their dates. Flor is seen at the background scrubbing floors and being a maid. She's seen to be having good friends in Singapore, like Delia Maga, who's acted by Atty. Renee Cuckoo.
Act 3: A woman scorned, unlike any other
The scene has Flor returning home after a few years. She couldn't recognize her sons. She realizes that Efren had been cheating behind her back. This creates a rap number between Flor and Efren, confronting him about the cheating. The scandal is indeed out in the open because her sons talked about a certain "Tita Neneng". Flor goes back to Singapore, unaware of the nightmare that was about to hit her.
Act 4: The act of cruelty, the death of Delia Maga
We have Wong Sing Keung (played by Gary Martinez) rapping against Delia Maga. We find that his son Nicholas had died of a seizure. We have Joanna Concepcion (acting as the mother) crying. This creates an angry rap battle. Sing Keung says Filipinos are the same and subhumans in Singapore. We see Sing Keung beat up Delia.
Sing Keung then strangles Delia to death with a jumping rope. He then sings, "We shall frame Delia's best friend Flor." We have a scene of Emilia Frenilla (played by Angel Galimba) overhearing the conversation between Sing Keung and his brother (acted by Toady Casino) singing, "We shall frame Flor Contemplacion!"
The next scene has them catching Emelia being arrested. Sing Keung and his brother says, "We have connections in the government. There shall be no witnesses!"
Act 5: The wrongful arrest and interrogation
Flor is later arrested by the Singaporean police. The policemen do a sing and dance "Stupid Filipinos can't do anything right." They arrest Flor and send her over to the police station. Flor is put under interrogation via extreme pressure.
We get a rap number in the dark room. Flor is being roughly handled by the cops. A drum (full of water) is there. Flor is being head-dunked into the water with the question, "How did you kill the boy and Delia Maga?" two times. Flor replies, "I did not kill anybody!" two times. When it doesn't work, the policemen decide to give her an electric shock.
The scene shows Flor being electrocuted after she's wet. The screaming is first class. They keep rapping even as they are shocking her. In my imagination, Sarah does an electric pain dance. After that, she's drugged and made to sign a confession.
Act 6: The mockery of justice
We have a scene where Romeo (acted by Neri Colmenares) tries to defend Flor. He has his two witnesses, Emeilia and Virginia Parumog (acted by Jiandred Faustino), testifying in court. However, Wong Sing Keung shuts them down and insults them as stupid Filipinos in a rap battle Justice T.S. Sinnathuray is acted by Carlos Zarate.
After an angry rap battle, the courtroom has a musical called "Guilty or Not Guilty". Romeo cringes over the Singaporean trial. They sing and dance that they are about to hang Flor. It gets dramatic as the police drag flor. The judges sings, "Death row, death row, for this Filipino! Filipinos are stupid!"
Act 7: Kahit Konting Awa ballet
The musical has the most depressing scene. Flor was only allowed to talk to her children via bulletproof glass. She says, "Can I just hold them?" The guard says, "Stupid Filipinos aren't even human. We Singaporeans enslave you Filipinos. We just promise high income but we Singaporeans can't survive without oppressing Filipinos. Mwawahahahahaha!"
Flor was then led to the gallows. The music "Kahit Konting Awa" plays as oppressed Filipinos dance a ballet. The guards are then seen beating up Filipinos and denying them due process. Flor can be seen escorted by a priest and nuns. She's led to the gallows. The end of the song her hanged. The children hold each other as their mother is unfairly executed.
Act 8: The tragic finale, Flor is declared a heroine
The coffin arrives and the whole nation cries, "Flor! Flor! Bigyan ng katarungan!" The music "Bayan Ko" by the late Freddie Aguilar is sang. We see crowds mourn and declare Flor to be a heroine. The coffin is lowered by the crying crowds. The Filipinos are seen burning the flag of Singapore as a protest. despite the lack of real burning of a flag on stage.
This is done before the roll call.
