Why Don't The Anti-Constitutional Reform Clowns Go To Singapore And Tell Their Parliament That The 1987 Constitution Is The "Best In The World"?
The Independent Singapore News |
Just because Hsien Loong praised the late Noynoy Aquino doesn't mean that he's telling the Philippines, "Okay Filipinos, you've got the best constitution in the world." Noynoy had some good programs (which Get Real Philippines tends to demonize because Benign0 is even more clueless) but how long did they last under the presidential system? Noynoy only had six years to carry out his plans. Right now, President Rodrigo R. Duterte is just as limited as Noynoy. Even so, the Philippines still has some ongoing issues which are apparent not just during the Noynoy and Duterte years. These issues have been rampant even after the fall of the Marcos Years - which were NOT the golden years either! I wonder how will the members of the Singaporean parliament react to that?
I think they would just be laughed at. If the 1987 Constitution is the best in the world then think about the many issues. Why do you think Noynoy's fight against corruption didn't do much to bring us to the top ten countries with the least corruption? Why do you think Duterte's regime has now brought the Philippines lower again than that index? Is going for rank 95 REALLY that much to be proud about? Both the Noynoy Administration and the Duterte Administration have much to answer for with their blunders too. Noynoy has good plans and Duterte has good plans but both leaders are held back because of the 1987 Constitution. Noynoy even said in one of his speeches (that was regarding the MRT expressway that got him into hot water) it was time to end the old system. I wonder if Noynoy suddenly decided to support charter change? Did that statement actually get into Duterte's head too? If the 1987 Constitution is the best in the world then why hasn't the Philippines (which is a MUCH BIGGER COUNTRY) defeat Singapore in almost every way? Singapore is a smaller country and yet it defeated the Philippines. Singapore entered the Top 20 best countries but WHERE IS THE PHILIPPINES in that list? If Noynoy and Duterte were so good then why didn't the Philippines enter that zone yet?
The big truth of Noynoy and Duterte getting held back (as well as many of their predecessors) has to be with the system. The Philippines is still stuck with two of the worst systems namely the presidential system AND the Philippines' economy isn't completely liberated. One of the reasons why Singapore is doing its COVID-19 response BETTER is because of the parliamentary system. Another thing worth noting is that Kuan Yew didn't transform Singapore into a major power in just six years. The parliamentary system has more scrutiny and removes unnecessary term limits - limit the powers of the chief executive while granting no term limit as long as the person is capable of service. Singapore's wealth is derived from the fact that it's very FDI-friendly. Kuan Yew invited multinational corporations to invest in Singapore. One can argue that Noynoy also did. However, Noynoy should've worked on to COMPLETELY get rid of the negative list so more utility sectors can compete. It was a weakness in Noynoy's economic program not to completely remove the negative list. Duterte should work hard to get rid of the negative list COMPLETELY. William Pesek is right to say that Duterte should've focused on removing restrictions over the infrastructure programs.
What's their defense that the 1987 Constitution is the "best in the world" then? Is it because the Philippines is supposedly "more moral" because of its absence of LGBT unions, abortion (which Singapore applies rather conservatively but I still disagree with the practice), and liberal use of divorce? Do I need to mention libel laws in the Philippines today are still that EXCESSIVE? People tend to sue each other in court over petty quarrels on social media. Sure, one can argue (and I would as a conservative) that the SOGIE bill will bring confusion, abortion kills the unborn, and that liberal use of divorce destroys the family. However, the OFW phenomenon has done damage too. How do we account for families torn apart by the OFW phenomenon where Filipinos fly abroad to get jobs because there are hardly ANY JOBS in the Philippines? I don't see that any better than the effects of liberal use of divorce. Sure, divorce can harm the children then again so does absentee parenting. Abortion is also harmful to women too then again what about mothers who are forced to go abroad because of a lazy husband? Aren't the effects more or less the same? Hmmm, I just wonder what reasons they will have to tell Singapore then?
