What makes a Filipino? Is it the quest for "Filipino racial purity" or one's love and devotion to the Philippines? Definitely, I'm really proud to have Filipino mixed breeds compete for the Philippines. Whether it'd be half-whites like Catriona Gray and Pia Wurtzbach - we also have Filipino with Chinese descent athlete Agatha Fernandez Wong representing the Philippines. At this point, pun intended, somehow the Filipina mestiza Wuxia champion Wong proves the quest for Filipino racial purity wrong.
I remembered some rather unusual backlash against Catriona herself for her dual ethnicity. I don't care if Catriona was born in Australia or is half-white if her heart belongs to the Philippines. As for Agatha, I do feel like her father is already a natural-born Filipino and having married a Filipino woman from Dagupan cements her status as a FILIPINO. What flag did she carry during the #SeaGames2019? China? No, she carried the name of the FILIPINO PEOPLE when she wowed the world that Filipinos too can get good at Wushu. I don't know where she got her trainers. She probably went to China for training. Send some good Filipino athletes to competent Chinese Wushu teachers and they too can become Wushu-style Filipinos.
The whole idea of maintaining racial purity is a dangerous one. Those who want to need to learn from the aftermath of Adolph Hitler's quest for the supreme Aryan race. Hitler's quest for ethnic cleansing had caused the German economy to collapse. Hitler removing the Jews and confiscating their assets killed the geese that laid the golden egg. Just imagine if the Philippines should suddenly have a program to exterminate those who are deemed "not Filipino enough". It's bad enough to be already a protectionist nation. Kill all the Filipino-Chinese or Filipino-Spanish just because they're not "Filipino enough" and suffer Hitler's consequences. The revenues for the country would eventually drop short as a result.
That's why I even wrote about the forever gray areas of Filipino racial purity. Whether Filipinos like it or not - their culture has been a pretty mixed bag. The same can be true for the pride Agatha brings to the Filipino people. Right now, it's best just to think of Filipinos as a MIXED RACE. Agatha has both Chinese and Filipino blood running in her. She's practicing a CHINESE sport. She brought pride by being a Filipina who is a Wuxia practitioner. Other Filipinos have also succeeded in other fields as a result of foreign influence. Just think Lydia De Vega succeeded in a Greek-inspired event. Regine Velasquez-Alcasid and Lea Salonga-Chien succeeded better in other countries. So, let's just forget about looking for Filipino racial purity because Wong proved it wrong!
