Press Freedom Would've Probably Died From 2016-Present Under President Roxas And Vice President Trillanes
Fighting for freedom? I want to throw in a new joke to address the issue of Maria Ressa's supporters who are now tagging #DefendPressFreedom and #IStandWithMariaRessa. This time, let's imagine a new scenario on what could have happened if both Mar Roxas and Antonio Trillanes IV were president and vice president -- one of them would be the death of press freedom under the two of them.
So what could have happened if these two won? Chances are they would actually only favor publications that are in their favor. They would control social media platforms via their appointees. They would take down any truly non-partisan, independent publications such as Manila Times in favor of anyone who would favor them -- whether it'd be Non-Inquirer, CRappler or ABiaS-CBN. They could use this to censor any bad news about them. Worse, they could also misapply the libel clause of the Anti-Cybercrime Law in their favor rather than in favor of protecting people from malicious implications online. The media would be more or less be in their favor. Government approved shows would be anything that would put either one of them in a positive light. Anything negative said about about them or their minions could be criminally charged such as Secretary of Defense Gary Alejano, COMELEC chief Romulo Macalinlang or Chief Justice Chito Gascon to name a few.
The chances are they may build a new huge prison cell out of taxpayers' money for their haters. You can see one journalist after the other who would go to jail BECAUSE they discovered some anomalies. Maybe, they can lock somebody up because they caught President Roxas' antics to be but fakeries. Maybe, they can lock somebody up because they criticized Vice President Trillanes' spreading gossip without any evidence whatsoever. They could even go as far as to even control the Internet such as censoring ANYONE who is not in their favor. So much for criticizing the Marcos Years huh?
