Last Minute Christmas Shopping - It's More Fun In The Philippines!

As a 1990s child and a 1980s baby - I could remember watching the box office flop called Jingle All the Way. It was sort of a nice spin-off from the serious, action-packed Arnold Schwarzenegger who would be fighting the Snake Cult, Predators, and be the Terminator. Instead, he would be engaged in so much stupidity all for a Turboman. The whole plot is stupidly surrounded by ONE STUPID TOY that nearly got him (and the postman named Myron) into a lot of danger. It also showed the stupidity of peer pressure because Jaime feels left out if he doesn't get that toy. Looking back at it - I just felt that the film may not be so funny anymore as an adult. It's because I'm suddenly reminded of one bad trait many Filipinos have had for years namely the LAST MINUTE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING!

Why is the bad habit of last-minute Christmas shopping so irritating? A lot of Christmas sales happen EARLY as NOVEMBER. Why aren't people actually deciding to take advantage of the EARLY CHRISTMAS SALE? Oh, let me guess - I guess out of being "Filipino" (which shouldn't be) that they decided to PROCRASTINATE and WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE before doing the Christmas shopping right? The scene in Jingle All the Way where Harold couldn't get a Turbo Man action figure for his son shows it. I mean, it's freaking CHRISTMAS EVE so it's the worst time to get the hit toy you want, right? Harold also had TWO WEEKS AGO to get it too. Then another reason for procrastination is because they don't have the money yet. They would rather wait for the LAST MINUTE to do shopping? Is it me or has it become part of "Filipino tradition" when it shouldn't be? Noche Buena? Christmas parties for officemates? Nothing wrong with them! But it's the last-minute Christmas shopping that has to go because it's a stress factor. Not to mention - last-minute Christmas shopping is a MAJOR SOURCE of traffic too!

The truth is last-minute Christmas shopping is a riot. I don't care if they say it's fun. It's more frustrating than fun. It just reminds me of how Christmas shopping a week or two before Christmas happens. The other is when Christmas wishlists are made on the third or fourth week of November. The gifts are bought right ahead and wrapped - ready to be sent when the big day comes. I don't care about the thrill if it just brings me stress. I could care more about the thrill of handing over presents than the thrill of competing with other customers. Just waiting for the thrill can just bring disappointments like being able to buy the stuff you want and need for the big day, right?
