Do you want to know the ROOT CAUSE of why the local Philippine TV networks produce such garbage series and underperform? The two biggest networks happen to be ABS-CBN and GMA-7 - two networks I haven't watched for some time. Their issue is nearly similar to how Globe and PLDT are in - there's hardly any competition. People only move from one network to another regardless of offerings. I think about how often ABS-CBN and GMA-7 are the two major giants in the network. These two are nearly duopolies because of how many channels they dominate in terms of Filipino-owned channels, right?
Why do you think ABS-CBN and GMA-7 end up with really dumb dubs, really dumb teleseryes that air on a daily basis and goes nowhere, and the unhealthy competition that seems to be present. I even heard that Sky Cable (also under ABS-CBN) purposely disrupted the signal from GMA-7 to give more ratings to ABS-CBN's noontime show. The networks are frequently at wars with badly dubbed foreign shows and their brain decaying teleseryes. They always brag about who's number one but couldn't prove it that well. Their competition is a no-brainer like two crabs fighting to get out of the basket, right? The real problem has to be a LACK OF COMPETITION because the negative list forbids foreigners from owning mass media in the Philippines.
What these two networks need is MORE COMPETITION. Let foreigners have a part in the mass media either by partnership or 100% ownership and these two networks will be forced to man up. They would probably stop their childish quarrel or PERISH. Let them play dirty and they may consider getting their licenses revoked. If they don't want to perish then they need to play by the game of Adam Smith's invisible free hand of the free market. They need to embrace fair and healthy competition in order to survive. That way, both networks will probably stop acting like babies and grow up!
