The recent blunder of Senator Bato Dela Rosa is when he said that Antonio Sanchez who has been in jail for some time "should be given a second chance". I do appreciate Senator Dela Rosa's dedication but he's definitely in need of some common sense. He may be concerned about NPA recruitment but his recent statement is a blunder. If anyone is asking why the death penalty can get ineffective is because it's not used properly. If you're just executing poor criminals but sparing RICH ONES who were confirmed guilty, if you're having judges that accept bribes, if you have power-playing (like it turned out that Thelma Chiong's sister was an appointee of Erap) - that's why I wrote about the need to be cautious before reinstating the death penalty.
Former mayor Sanchez should've been the first to get the lethal injection - not a small-time crook like the late Leo Echegaray. Sanchez was already guilty of several crimes against life so why was he just kept in jail (and he even got privileges) while Echegaray was executed? Shouldn't both men be at the death row for crimes against life? Sanchez getting executed would have had a stronger message that nobody is above the law. Just imagine if Sanchez were sentenced to death back in 1999 and it was televised. It would deliver a more powerful message than Echegaray's execution. Sanchez getting execute would send the message that nobody should be above the law.
The death penalty should be the least of the concerns right now and focus on economic policies first. The Philippine justice system still needs to be fixed at several levels because it's defective. Maybe, one can consider amending the Revised Penal Code ( RA 10592) that Noynoy Aquino by giving heavier penalties to corrupt politicians. Small-time crooks may still be subject to rehabilitation. I would also suggest fixing the judicial systems and everything involved in it to avoid innocent people from getting executed too. But should it return the first people who should get executed are big-time crooks and corrupt politicians should be among top priority?
