The Bigger Problem Is Not #OtsoDiretso But The Presidential System

It doesn't matter too much now if #OtsoDiretso wins or loses IF and IF the Philippines retains the lousy presidential system. If you do some research on its candidates you will find out how impressive the resumes of these guys are from their alma mater to professions? Mar Roxas was an investment banker. Bam Aquino is an awarded businessman. We have lawyers who came from prestigious universities in Erin Tanada, Chel Dionko, Florin Hilbay and Romulo Macalintal. Gary Alejano is a Naval Engineer with a Master's Degree graduate from the University of the Philippines. Sarima Gutoc-Tomawis is a graduate of Mass Communications and a Master's Degree holder from the University of the Philippines. That alone makes them sound promising but what happened?

"A bad system ruins good people every time!" is the answer to that. The popularity-based presidential system is a much bigger problem than the candidates of #OtsoDiretso. Did you know that Roxas once supported the Constitutional Correction of removing foreign investment restrictions but later changed his mind? Did you know that Bam was once a big time businessman with many awards but ended up suggesting the rather idiotic pagpag law? Did you know that Hilbay was once that brilliant lawyer who emerged from poverty in the slums of Tondo? You know how much these guys could have helped the country but ended up in the dumps? It's because it doesn't matter how intelligent a person is but the presidential system hardly does anything.

But what if members of the Liberal Party were frequently subjected to the weekly question hour. Maybe Roxas, Bam and Hilbay would have probably still given better ideas than they are giving now. Just imagine if today if we had Roxas, Bam and Hilbay as currently Opposition Senators frequently pointing out the mistakes of Prime Minister Rodrigo R. Duterte and giving him better solutions such as how to implement Build3x better. Maybe, these three would put their prestigious education to good use rather than end up spewing the nonsense they currently say right now.

In truth the #OtsoDiretso can go ahead and lose but a lousy system will still allow them to be replaced by people worse than they are. Just because the person isn't Yellow doesn't mean he or she is going to do well. Should I mention the likes of Tito Sotto, Grace Poe-Llamanzares (who's unfortunately a TraPoe), Pantaleon Alvarez, Carlos Zarate and Neri Colmenares? But a parliamentary system would actually greatly reduce the chances of people decaying and idiots will get voted out of office. Maybe, members of #OtsoDiretso wouldn't be in the place where they are today if it wasn't for the lousy presidential system!
