Trying to Respond To A Really Facedesk Worthy Comment From E. Subijano

Here's a facepalm worthy comment I got from Manila Times:

"The Philippines will be a loser without foreign investments? In the first place foreign investors take out more capital than they bring in. No, the Filipinos will not lose without foreign investments. The Filipinos will survive and become even better without it."

Here's a sensible response from someone called Domo:

"Yeah right subijano like how? Make substandard products with their dysfunctional pinoy pride thanks to their “pwede na iyan” mentality? So much for world class."

Now it's time for me to write my response with an open letter to E. Subijano:

One thing is certain E. Subijano it would be safe to assume the following about you. You are a person who has his Pinoy Pride. You are a typical Failipino because of your Pinoy Pride. You are against the values of the enlightened Pinoy. Besides you might need to really think of Filipino history.

Let me remind you of Filipino history. The Philippines of today was born out of foreign influence and foreign investments. Just think... although Spain brought in a lot of bad values like the el hombre attitude. The Philippines was born from King Philip II a FOREIGN KING. He made Manila the capital of the Philippines.

So you say the Philippines will not lose without foreign investments? Did you know before Spain colonized the Philippines, the early settlers were trading with foreigners. Chinese, Arabs and Indians were trading with the early Pinoys. Pinoys are also composed of several settlers such as Indonesian, Malaysian and Aetas for early settlers then Chinese and Spanish became part of the mix.  In short, Pinoys are a result of several races mixed together.

Now how would be Philippines be without foreign investment? Well I hope you would understand to what's really wrong with your thinking.

You say the Philippines will be better off without foreign investment? You might want to think a lot of things you enjoy today are foreign influenced. Take Filipino food for instance - it has Spanish, Japanese and Chinese influence. You may take that the Philippines has European influence thanks to Spain.  Fiesta is a foreign influence brought by the Spanish.

During the Spanish occupation's removal, the native Pinoys were not good enough. You have to remember that Ignatio Paua was Chinese. Jose Rizal was Chinese. Chinese businessmen were around. You might want to think if it wasn't for the Americans, the Philippines would have not been liberated from Spain.  Do you think the Philippines could have liberated itself with just bolos and spears? No... the Americans came in and helped the Philippines. Later they also helped the Philippines overthrow Imperial Japan's rule. Although there was the Filipino-American war but one must admit, burying the hatchet is the best thing. Even some of the Philippines' worst practices like low-minded entertainment and celebrity centered news is American.

Domo is right about his comment. It's sad to say but the Philippines is plagued with substandard products and the mediocre "pwede na yan" (that will do) mentality. Do you realize that exports and imports help the world economy go round? You are still in favor of economic protectionism aren't you?  You might as well think of what Mao Zedong's economic protectionism did to China. Only when China opened its gates and economy did it progress.

On the other hand, enlightened Pinoys unlike you, know the situation. Maybe you don't see it but the whole economic protectionism is the reason why OFWs are abundant. Don't even think for a second that Filipinos working around the world means the Philippines is taking over the world. Chinese are around the world too but does China rule the world? No... these exits were happening because of bad conditions. Some Pinoys even fly off because of the real situation.

You still think the slogan "It's More Fun in the Philippines" is no matter what always true? You need a serious reality check.  If you ever get butthurt from reading this response, it will only show how much your Pinoy Pride isn't helping. Sorry if this open letter offends you but you need to hear the truth!

    2. Of course, by saying this, I'm not trying to sound like someone who wants foreigners and their influences out of the country when in fact, I do agree that what the Philippines right now is a result of different foreign influences. What I'm just trying to say is that EVERYTHING has their good and bad sides.
