The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) should implement a national broadband plan for a cheaper and better quality internet connection, Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV said on Thursday.
The DICT is expected to present its plan before the Senate science and technology committee next week.
Aquino said he expects the DICT to present different options on the national broadband plan: use the current infrastructure, put up its own system, or find other methodologies to connect.
"We have to know how much it will cost and what are the benefits of each option. It all boils down to cost-benefit analysis,” he said.
“We have to work on solutions that will give the public cheaper, better quality internet for the long term,” he added.
Aquino said the Senate hearing will “fine tune” the DICT’s plan to come up with a consensus on what needs to be done to improve the internet infrastructure.
The DICT earlier said that existing power transmission lines will likely be used to save on cost and achieve blazing speeds in internet connectivity under the national broadband plan.
The DICT intends to implement a national broadband scheme next year, and is now in the final stages of coming up with the plan.

Okay, I appreciate Bum's concern but here's what. If he wants to get his long term goals then he should really think outside the Yellow Box. He should consider dumping the Aquino First policy even if he's an Aquino. Just because he's an Aquino doesn't mean he should continue to adhere to the "glorious tradition" of the Aquinos. Just because he looks like his late Uncle Ninoy doesn't mean he should be exactly like his Uncle Ninoy. In short, he should consider dumping the Aquino First Policy if he expects better Internet.
The fact that the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands means that two Internet Service Providers isn't enough. Singapore can do with only three because it's just an island. But the Philippines would have to use a lot of underwater cables. Two ISPs vs. 7,107 islands isn't going to help the Philippines. That's why Bum should consider supporting economic liberalization to get his demands met. He should just forget he's an Aquino and move on from it. He shouldn't even be proud of it or be proud he's cousins with Noynoy Aquino. He should instead move to liberate the economy. He could do a Lacson by leaving the Liberal Party because it's a waste of his brain to let it rot there like what happened to Mar Roxas after joining it.
