I remembered when I wrote a post where I addressed if many Filipinos ever bother to know the meaning of the word "serious". I decided to write it because of the Greenhills incident where bystanders should've just LEFT because it was a HOSTAGE CRISIS. The recent COVID-19 outbreak (which I love to refer to as the Legacy Virus) would have me asking if you'd rather get infected by it than follow simple guidelines. Just the reactions from many Filipinos towards the proposed quarantine to slow down the spread of COVID-19 is something. Worse, there are still those who have their irrational fear of soldiers and policemen. Do they even feel that they would rather trust the criminals than the cops? If that's the case then they should trust abusive soldiers and policemen because such people are already considered criminals!
Many Filipinos tend to mistake resilience in times of calamities as taking them lightly. While calmness is needed in times of emergencies but you can't afford just to dismiss them. To be serious means to take CAREFUL CONSIDERATION. Just looking at pictures of Filipinos who would have the mentality of taking floods lightly makes you wonder why progress hardly happens. The COVID-19 is a serious epidemic right now. Don't believe me? Why don't you take a look at the news and look at the death toll in Italy and now the United States of America? Many Italians and Americans are either infected or killed by COVID-19 because of their hardheadedness. Just thinking about ABC News' video on racism against Asians in the U.S. makes you facedesk. If they didn't stay at home and they didn't protect themselves then whose fault is it? It was their fault. Not to mention, joking that you've got COVID-19 isn't funny since it causes unnecessary panic. Instead, have a sense of humor but know when you've got to be serious, okay?
You can consider why some countries are now doing better to fight off the virus. Rappler's Marites DaƱguilan Vitug has an article where she poses important lessons that President Duterte should consider in handling COVID-19. I would also think of how South Korea reined in the COVID-19 outbreak without shutting everything down. I think the much bigger problem has to be that of people's refusal to cooperate with SIMPLE GUIDELINES. While I do think President Duterte needs to fire Health Secretary Francisco Duque for incompetence but cooperation with local governments is just as vital. Then again isn't it already a typical Filipino trait not to follow simple guidelines? I don't see anything "manly" about not following simple guidelines and how following them makes one a fag? The South Korean "fags" are in fact more manly than Filipino "men" who don't follow simple guidelines.
If you want the quarantine to end soon or more people to recover then please follow simple guidelines. The number of health workers can't compensate for how fast COVID-19 can spread. Why are they asked to stay at home in times of an epidemic? If you can offer alternatives (such as what Vico Sotto did with the mobile market strategy in Pasig) then suggest something only when it's USEFUL. If you have nothing useful to say then just quarantine your mouth. April 1 is no guarantee that the effects of the virus will just temporarily pause for that day.
