Badmouthing The Late Henry Sy Sr.'s Success Is Evidence Of Crab Mentality

Henry Sy Sr.'s death indeed has brought in some controversial statements from activists and anti-capitalists themselves, right? There's a lot of badmouthing about the late Sy himself by the poor -- never mind that Sy actually came from the poorest of the poor. Yet he succeeded not because the Philippine government back then had cash transfer programs -- he succeeded through hard work and proper asset management. He started out with a sari-sari store then he opened a shoe mart (hence that's why it's called SM because his success came from that store) and he and his family expanded the family business called the SM malls.

Badmouthing the late Sy for me reminds me of the one problem namely the culture of crab mentality. Ever noticed that when one crab tries to move out of the basket that another crab drags the other crab down? Remember that Sy was once a Chinese guy who became a Filipino in his childhood days. It was that time when the Philippines was still a progressive country unlike today. He struggled during his days of poverty and he rose up to become a big time successful businessman. Was he even smart-shamed and rich-shamed by natural-born Filipinos because he sought to defy the status quo? Hmmm... I'd believe so that happened because he chose to get out of poverty. Then I wonder are some of those badmouthing him descendants of those who once smart-shamed and rich-shamed him?

Why are there some Filipinos who hate Filipino-Chinese even if the latter are still considered Filipinos? I don't think it's just an obsession with maintaining Filipino racial purity and maybe saying that Filipino-Chinese pollute the "poor Filipino gene pool" is probably just an excuse. While I do admit that there are bad Filipino-Chinese then there are also bad Filipinos too. I guess it's because that while not all Filipino-Chinese are rich but it's because many of the businesses are owned by Filipino-Chinese who were once indigents. The success is indeed worth getting jealous about, isn't it? Yet, you've got some of these idiots who have their stupid jealousy while accusing their critics of being jealous of them when the former aren't jealous. Jealous of what? Their carefree stupidity?

The irony of these badmouthing is that anti-capitalists are using stuff that are made through capitalism such as desktops, laptops and mobile phones -- all of these are a result of capitalism. It just reminded me of the time I got into an argument with Aeta the writer of Fliptards (though said blog is now empty) -- I remembered even telling him that Google is a result of capitalism, that computers are a result of capitalism so why does he use them? It also reminds me of the irony that many adherents of the anti-capitalist framework of socialism or communism are benefiting from products of capitalism or free enterprise. For all we know -- these people badmouthing Sy write now bought their gadgets at any store renting at an SM Mall!
