It's Time For ABiaS-CBN To GROW UP From Being A Bondying Network

Who can remember the film Bondying from the 80s and the 1954 version? Consider the film itself was probably a commentary of overprotective grandmothers who don't want any harm to come to their beloved grandchild. However, the overprotective grandmother can go beyond the literal. The recent case of ABiaS-CBN seems to be a case of babying by the Philippine government. For decades, ABiaS-CBN enjoyed the government franchise, which in turn, turned it into an infantile network. But it's not only ABiaS-CBN but also MANY Filipino businesses are like Bondyings due to economic protectionism.

What's so noticeable is that Rappler now reports that ABiaS-CBN now shifting towards digital and cable after "shutdown". I think ABiaS-CBN is not thinking outside the box ever since their animosity with both Noynoy Aquino (2014) and President Rodrigo R. Duterte. They felt that they could get their franchise all the time. The rude awakening came that they can't become a big baby of a network forever.

This was also mentioned by the same article by Rappler:

“The company takes into consideration the probable shift of consumer behavior in terms of accessing content, as well as the ever-changing technology available to the public,” ABS-CBN said.

“The denial of the franchise application…does not affect the primary franchise of ABS-CBN to exist as a corporation and does not affect the rights of its shareholders," it added.

A big chunk – 50% – of the company's unaudited consolidated revenues for the period ending in September 2019 came from free-to-air advertising.

To mitigate the impact, the company said it will continue to implement cost control measures, such as reduction of overhead expenses, rationalization of capital expenditures, and streamlining of manpower.

Having a HUGE CHUNK of revenues from free-to-air advertising is just babying now, isn't it? Now, ABiaS-CBN is thrown into the cruel world. The government's free-to-air franchise is OFF. I don't know if they could actually start working together again and need more employees. But one thing is certain they can still OPERATE with both digital and cable. I mean, I can still watch ANC and The Kapamilya Channel. The issue is NOT press freedom but their privilege to the free-to-air franchise. Again, this is a far cry from the Marcos Years. Did Duterte shut down the network from ANY OTHER operation still within legalities? I guess ABiaS-CBN bit off more than they can chew in hiring up to what could be 11 million, I meant, 11,000+ employees. It really is sad to have them lose their jobs. I wonder do the celebrities of ABiaS-CBN really care about their employees. I'm even feeling the plasticity there. They may have paid taxes and whatever but if there are certain violations then they have to deal with it. Again, they are NOT shut down and it's business as usual except they need to make MAJOR adjustments.

ABiaS-CBN will have to be part of the cable and digital services. Yes, they have now to compete with FOREIGN channels. I don't see ANY of ABiaS-CBN's teleseryes make it to the top ten of Netflix. SkyCable is still operational but they need to improve their services. ABiaS-CBN needs to really face the harsh reality of competition in the digital age. They want to prove themselves as NUMBER ONE? Don't just brag it - DO IT! They can also start by improving the quality of their shows. Maybe, start greatly reducing the number of episodes per teleserye from hundreds maybe to 10 to 16 episodes for a start. Better, stop the DAILY broadcast, and give their channels more balance in programming. Maybe, end the most pointless Ang Probinsyano TV series for good. Hopefully, September 2020 will be the end of it and they should MOVE ON and make new series. Yup, learn to operate without a government franchise and they can start doing it NOW.

What's also needed to be done is to remove ALL unreasonable restrictions regarding foreign direct investments (FDI). Get rid of 60-40 and we can have better Internet services. ABiaS-CBN's big failure of mind was in its opposition to constitutional reform. If it did support it then they would probably be able to do better WITHOUT a government franchise. They could use the ever-expanding Internet as their new playing ground. More telcos mean better Internet. Sky Internet would be forced to do better if it wants to survive. That way, ABiaS-CBN will definitely stop being a Bondying. After all, Bondying did mature at the end of the film, right?
