How Can Filipinos Follow Simple Guidelines When Those In Power Hardly Do?

It's always been a constant source of irritation when you see Filipinos who just refuse to follow simple guidelines, right? If that's so then how much more for people in power. Well, it's really sad to realize that Koko Pimentel himself violated the guidelines. It was really a BIG MISTAKE for President Rodrigo R. Duterte to receive Koko into PDP-Laban. Note that PDP-Laban is a union of two parties namely PDP by Aquilino PIMENTEL JR. and LABAN by Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. respectiely. Koko himself had an ad with former president Noynoy Aquino who encouraged people to use their kokote. However, neither Koko nor Noynoy used their kokotes (coconut shell) that much. Shouldn't Noynoy have immediately apologized for the botched handling of the Rolando Mendoza incident?

Koko was under the simple guideline of quarantine. Right now, more than ever, we need to follow simple guidelines in regards to the COVID-19 infection. If you're told to stay at home then please STAY AT HOME! Instead, Koko defied the rule and went to S & R. Did he ever realize that the virus he was carrying was HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS? The situation of politicians who don't follow simple guidelines is something. Although I'm no fan of the Game of Thrones - one can consider Joffrey's infamous (or famous) line, "You can't talk to me like that - the king can do as he likes!" Tyrion his uncle bluntly replied, "The mad king did as he liked and looked what happened to him!" Many politicians today tend to think like that before Jack Nicholson (the actor playing Joffrey) made that line famous.

Consider that the Philippine presidential system is one-sided. Why do some presidential systems are working better (ex. Taiwan and South Korea)? It's because they do mix parliamentary features into their presidential systems. However, the Philippine presidential system hardly has a lot of features needed to do real check-and-balance. One of these features is having a unified Majority Bloc (Government) and a unified Minority Bloc (Opposition). Another thing that the Philippines lack is having a weekly question hour. Weekly questioning makes things worse according to a fat Peter Griffin lookalike? Puh-lease don't tell me weekly meetings done by professors and companies make things worse? I remembered having stiff penalties in college whenever students didn't show up during mandatory consultation hours per week. If there were weekly questionings then consider it that Health Secretary Francisco Duque and Koko could've impeached via votes of no confidence.

If you expect Filipinos to follow simple guidelines then everything should go back to SYSTEMS first. People do matter then again so do SYSTEMS. If the system produces highly disciplined politicians then expect a highly disciplined population. If not, then just expect people to do what they want regardless of consequences.

  1. Because the current Political System does not have accountability. As long as we'll not change it, regardless of our roar, it always be useless and meaningless.
