Pinoy Products And Services Will Always Have Foreign Influence

There's nothing wrong with asking for support for local businesses as long as these businesses serve all their customers (Filipino or not) properly. Those who cry out for "Sariling Atin Only" may have failed to realize that Pinoy products and services aren't free of foreign influence. Just think of the example that the Goya chocolate bar is a result of American influence and Delfi Marketing is owned by a Tsinoy. Should I mention that Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is HALF-GERMAN, half-Filipino?

Whether those ultranationalists like it or not but Filipino culture is a mixture of different cultures. The Chinese, Arabs, Indians, etc. already traded with the Philippines prior to colonization. The Spanish occupied the Philippines for nearly 300 years. The Americans colonized the Philippines with the Commonwealth Government. By then, the whole idea of Pinoy racial purity is but an empty dream. Who among the civilized Filipinos can freely claim that they have no foreign blood? Maybe, those who can "claim" it are those natives but it seems unlikely. Just rereading my Filipino history textbooks from the past already make me realize that Filipinos are a mixed ethnic group due to all the migration and colonization that took place.

You can take a look at Filipino cuisine and see how it its delicious servings happen to be a wonderful mixture of foreign influence. You have Pinoy versions of foreign food because some want to have the Filipino taste. The sotanghon is a result of the use of vermicelli which has its roots from China. Palabok uses bihon from China and some Spanish recipes. Halo-halo or shaved ice has its origins from Japan though Filipinos made their own version to suit their taste. If Filipino cuisine didn't get any foreign influence I can't imagine how it would taste. Fortunately, foreign influence came in and certain Filipinos innovated these dishes to make a Filipino version. It's just like how we have Koreans making kimbap based on the sushi and how the Japanese invented the katana learning it from some Chinese weaponry. In short, every culture today borrows and modifies from each other. Isn't innovation of various influences a wonderful thing?

There's some Filipino music that either get covered abroad (such as "Anak" by Freddie Aguilar and that Jacky Cheung covered one of Ariel Rivera's songs) or they cover foreign songs. I still can't forget the Tagalog covers of the Japanese song "Saigo No Iiwake" (Last Excuse) which many of them are done well. Nothing is wrong with supporting Filipino-made music and lately, we have Beverly Caimen who sings Kamen Rider Build's opening theme. But it's all about acknowledging that you made a cover when you made a cover. I still like Filipino covers of foreign songs and have nothing against Filipino songs getting a foreign cover. On the other hand, calling it "Original Pinoy Music" instead of just "Pinoy Music" is nothing more than an attempt to bootleg something through loopholes and fictitious claims. I'd call it Pinoy Music because it was sang by a Pinoy. A Pinoy is simply another term for any legal citizen of the Philippines.

Should I also mention that you can't have teleseryes or ABiaS-CBN in HD if it wasn't for foreign influence? It still sickens me how some Filipinos still have the mentality of "I hate Japan." never mind that the Empire of Japan is already dead. If they want to release a DVD of the latest teleserye you can thank Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony and Philips for that. If they want HD then we have Japan to thank for that. It's stupid to say that you watch teleseryes in the name of "nationalism" while conveniently ignoring that foreign equipment was used. It'd be hypocritical for local networks in the Philippines to play the colonial mentality card all the while they use foreign influence. Should I mention that economic protectionism is something that didn't even originate in the Philippines? Rather, protectionism is a foreign concept that evolved overtime and I don't think Emperor Tokugawa or Mao Zedong started it either.

If you want to have sariling atin only mentality and "Pure Pinoy" services then do me a favor and live in the stone age or to the indigenous way of life. It's time to get out of modern civilization and dress in native outfits. It would mean it's time to get rid of all the modern conveniences that they're enjoying today. They can start by first getting out of the Internet because it was made by Americans and throw away their rice cookers because they're born out of Japanese influence. It means they want rice they have to cook it the primitive way. They may have to make their own tools. The challenge of moving away from all foreign influence would be the challenges of proving the pambansang industriya theory in some uncharted island. If they have nothing but the island to industrialize and they don't get foreign influence then how can they even evolve to start with?
